Setting Up a Knowledge Base on Lucio

S
Written by Sauris at Lucio

The Knowledge Base feature allows you to upload your firm's trusted reference materials and give Lucio specific instructions on how to use them. Once set up, Lucio will refer to these materials automatically whenever a relevant query is asked, ensuring consistent and accurate responses across your team.

This is particularly useful when you have jurisdiction-specific laws, internal guidelines, or firm positions that you want Lucio to prioritise over its general training knowledge.

Step 1: Unlock Elevate Mode

Knowledge Base is currently available in Elevate mode. If you have not unlocked it yet, follow the steps here: https://help.lucioai.com/en/articles/16012778-elevate-mode. Once unlocked, make sure Elevate mode is turned on before proceeding.

Step 2: Open Knowledge Base

On the left panel of the Lucio web dashboard, click More and select Knowledge Base.

Step 3: Create a new Knowledge

Click to create a new Knowledge and give it a name that reflects the topic, for example the name of a law, a practice area, or a firm guideline. You will also see a Description field. Use this to tell Lucio what kind of queries this Knowledge should apply to, for example: "Reference materials and guidance for answering queries related to a specific jurisdiction or area of law."

Step 4: Add Instructions

In the Instructions field, write a note telling Lucio how to use this Knowledge. You can be as detailed as you like, as if you are briefing a junior on how to handle a specific topic. You can tell Lucio to always rely on an attached document; to ask the user to answer certain pre-set queries before proceeding with the task; to apply specific caveats at the start of every relevant answer; or to always answer in a particular format.

Step 5: Upload Reference Documents

In the Reference Documents section, upload the relevant PDFs, up to 30 files at 25 MB each. Lucio will read these files whenever this Knowledge is active, as per your Instructions. It is NOT mandatory to have reference documents for a Knowledge to be valid or useful. Simply providing Instructions is adequate.

Step 6: Set sharing preferences

On the final screen, choose who can access this Knowledge. You can keep it private, share it with specific users, or make it available organisation wide. Setting it to Organisation ensures every relevant user in the firm has access automatically without needing to configure anything on their end.

Once set up, Lucio will apply this Knowledge consistently across all relevant queries for every user it is shared with. Please note that Knowledge is ONLY applied if the query is asked on Elevate mode. When an answer is being generated on Elevate mode, the expandable drop-down labelled as “Thoughts” at the top of the answer will disclosure whether or not the query is “Consulting Knowledge” as one of the steps.

Note: This remains a beta feature and may occasionally behave unexpectedly. If you run into anything, submit feedback using the in-app help button. If the setup works well for one topic, the same process can be replicated for other practice areas, guidelines, or reference materials across the firm.

Examples of successfully-deployed Knowledge Bases:

  1. Drafting simple agreements (eg. non-disclosure agreements) based on pre-determined rules and guidance.

  2. Preparing demand letters: Knowledge Base can be prompted to first ask the user to provide 15-20 factual points before preparing the demand letter.

  3. Preparing cross-examination question banks for any future cases based on the attorneys’ preferred strategies and style of attack.

  4. Preparing signing and closing checklists or signature pages based on the firm’s standard formats and processes.

  5. Reviewing specific contracts (eg. construction contracts; marketing agreements) against pre-set parameters or playbooks for standardized review, with specific instructions such as “flag all contractor-favorable deviations”.

  6. Preparing executive summaries for due diligence reports based on the your pre-set formats and instructions.
